Inspire Youth

In January of 2014, Woodrow Martin, a resident of Littlefield for two years, was moved by his compassion for the children of his community. Though he had no children of his own, Woodrow felt compelled to provide activities and opportunities for the youth, especially those at high risk, to receive the love, skills and knowledge that would prepare them to thrive. After a couple of inquiries, he discovered that there was already a building established for this, the Our Place Community Center, not then in use.

After contacting Our Place, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the children of Lamb County, a partnership was established and Inspire Youth began. With a single $300 donation, and friends Woodrow gathered together to help him, Inspire Youth began to serve the youth of Littlefield. Currently, activities that promote leadership skills are provided Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 with an average of 22 kids in attendance, though they’ve served as many as 70. Plans are in the works to expand to 5 days a week with a broader spectrum of activities that will teach and encourage participants to be leaders in their community.

There have been ups and downs, challenges and victories, and through them all Inspire Youth continues to provide a hopeful alternative to the unhealthy temptations young people face.

When asked why he devotes himself to this program, Woodrow said, “I feel that the only real legacy any of us can ever make is in the lives of those around us, and this gives us all a wonderful opportunity to do just that.”
